Question : 1
3 truck drivers went to roadside cafe. 1st purchased 4 sandwiches, 1 coffee, 10 biscuits and paid Rs. 1.69. 2nd purchased 3 sandwiches, 1 coffee, 7 biscuits and paid Rs. 1.26. What did 3rd truck driver pay for a sandwich, a cup of coffee, and one biscuit ?
a) 68 paise
b) 35 paise
c) 89 paise
d) 40 paise
Answer »Answer: (d)
4x + 10 y = 1.69 ...(i)
3x + 7y = 1.26 ...(ii)
12x + 30y = 5.07
12x + 28y = 5.04
2y = 0.03
∴ y = ${0.03}/2$ .015
Putting the value of y in eqn. (i)
4x + 10 × 0.015 = 1.69
4x = 1.69 – 0.15 = 1.54
∴ x = ${1.54}/4$ = 0.385
1 × 0.385 + 0.015
= 0.385 + 0.015 = 0.400
= 40 paise
Question : 2
The total number of digits used in numbering the pages of a book having 366 pages is
a) 1098
b) 732
c) 990
d) 1305
Answer »Answer: (c)
Total number of digits
= (No. of digits in 1- digit page nos. + No. of digits in 2-digit page nos. + No. of digits in 3- digit page nos.)
= (1 × 9 + 2 × 90 + 3 × 267) = (9 + 180 + 801) = 990.
Question : 3
In a family, each daughter has the same number of brothers as she has sisters and each son has twice as many sisters as he has brothers. How many sons are there in the family ?
a) 4
b) 2
c) 3
d) 5
Answer »Answer: (c)
Let d and s represent the number of daughters and sons respectively.
Then, we have :
d – 1 = s and 2 (s – 1) = d.
Solving these two equations, we get: d = 4, s = 3.
Question : 4
A box contains five sets of balls while there are 3 balls in each set. Each set of balls has one color which is different from every other set, what is the least number of balls that must be removed from the box in order to claim with certainty that a pair of balls of the same colour has been removed?
a) 8
b) 6
c) 7
d) 9
Answer »Answer: (b)
Set | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 |
Balls | 1 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 1 |
Now, any further removal of balls from any set will ensure that removed ball is of the same colour as one of the already removed balls, thus constituting a pair of the removed balls of the same colour.
Set | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 |
Balls | 1 + 1 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 1 |
Hence, minimum no. of removed balls = 6
Question : 5
In a cricket team, three batsman Ricky, Sachin and Brian are the top three run-scorers in any order. Each of them gives two replies to any question, one of which is true and the other is false, again, in any order. When asked about who the top scorer was, following were the replies they gave :
Sachin : I got the top score. Ricky was second.
Brain : I got the top score. Sachin was second
Ricky : I got the top score. Sachin was third.
Which of the following is the correct order of batsmen who got the top score, second best and third best score respectively?
a) Ricky, Sachin, Brain
b) Brain, Ricky, Sachin
c) Brain, Sachin, Ricky
d) Sachin, Brain, Ricky
Answer »Answer: (b)
Only one of 1st replies given by all three can be true as top score can be taken by only one. Similarly, only two of 2nd replies given by all three can be true as maximum true replies are three. Now, consider the each of replies. Suppose Sachin's 1st reply is true and Brain's and Ricky's 2nd reply is true. Then Brain's and Ricky's 1st reply will be false. Then,
Sachin | Brain | Ricky | |
I | Sachin: | ||
II | Brain | Sachin | |
III | Ricky | Sachin |
Hence, it is not possible.
Now, suppose Brain's 1st reply is true and Sachin's and Ricky's 2nd reply is true. Then
Brain | Sachin | Ricky | |
I | Brain | ||
II | Ricky | Ricky | |
III | Sachin | Sachin |
Hence, it is clear that option (b) is correct.
